ABOUT BETH

Beth Barany works with genre novelists one-on-one and in groups to help them write, publish, and market their books. She's done so in two of her favorite places in the world (so far): the San Francisco Bay Area and Paris, France.

She's also a speaker and teacher and has presented in Italy, Boston, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles.

Based in Oakland, California, across the sparkly bay from San Francisco, and next to Berkeley, as a novelist, Beth writes magical tales of romance and adventure to transport readers to new worlds where anything is possible.

Certified as a Creativity Coach, an EFL-instructor, and NLP Practitioner, Beth is passionate about helping writers and authors get their message out into the world, gain confidence in their self-expression, and discover how they can get noticed and sell books to their readers.

AS A PRESENTER
Beth Barany is a writer’s coach, a keynote speaker and a marketing advisor for writers and publishers.

The author of the bestselling books, The Writer’s Adventure Guide: 12 Stages to Writing Your Book and Overcome Writer’s Block, she also publishes the monthly digital magazine, Author Entrepreneurship Magazine, to help authors create successful and sustainable careers.

Beth Barany's latest nonfiction book is Twitter for Authors: Social Media Book Marketing Strategies for Shy Writers.

Beth is the award-winning novelist of the young adult epic fantasy, Henrietta The Dragon Slayer, the first of a 3-book series. Henrietta and the Dragon Stone, Book 2 in the Five Kingdom series, was published in January 2014.

As a Master NLP Practitioner and Certified Creativity Coach, Beth has helped authors get their books written, edited and published for over 15 years, as well as guided them in effectively marketing and selling their work. Six of her clients’ books have been best-sellers.

AS A WRITER AND AUTHOR
Determined to get published, Beth published her first journalism article in the Paris Free Voice while she was living in the City of Lights in the early 1990s. It only took four tries and five rewrites!

From working in journalism for 15 years, Beth switched her focus to fiction, and now writes fantasy and paranormal romance.

In her off hours, Beth enjoys capoeira -- a Brazilian martial art/dance --, traveling, and watching movies with her husband, and playing with their two cats, Kitty and Leo.

Beth is married to singer/song-writer and bestselling author of The Torah Codes, Ezra Barany.

AS A COACH: MY STORY

Today I’m an award-winning novelist and write in two genres (young adult adventure fantasy and paranormal romance for teens and adults), and run a successful business as a coach and consultant for authors. Two of my nonfiction books for writers have been bestsellers, and my webinar on book blog tours has received mostly 5-star reviews and has over 100 students. My husband, Ezra Barany, is a best-selling novelist, and writes under two names. Together, we generate about one-third of our revenue from book and product royalties.

But as you can imagine, it wasn’t always this way.

Flashback to fifteen years ago… After always reaching and achieving my academic goals as a teen and an adult (valedictorian; fluent in French by 17; got into UC Berkeley), I’d just gotten rejected from graduate school in journalism. I was 30. What was I going to do with my life? I was working as an assistant manager at Blockbuster Video (remember such stores?), and was reeling from confusion, lack of direction, and felt unmoored from life. I had no clear direction. I was lost.

When I finally got up the courage to reread my application to graduate school in journalism (I only applied to one school), I saw that I’d written there in black and white that the deep reason why I wanted to go to grad school and study journalism was because I wanted to be a novelist.

I read that and it hit me. Duh! No wonder they didn’t let me in. And, if that’s what I say I wanted, well, I better get to it. I realized it was time for action. I realized the only way to be a writer was to write.

But where to begin? Such an overwhelming task. I did what a book nerd like me would do in the pre-internet days: I went to the library and read the local activities announcement board. Right away, I found a group that met at a local café and joined it. I started my first novel on the very first meeting. Through that group, and through another I joined soon after (and where I met my husband, bestselling author Ezra Barany – more on him later), I got on track and started working on that first novel.

Fast forward to today: I’ve written 5 novels, and published 2 novel2, 1 very short prequel, and 2 novellas so far. I’ve won a grand prize on one of my novels and was a finalist in several contests for other novels. I have 3 books in process at any given time, and I make time to write while running my growing business.

I’m so excited to be bringing my knowledge, passion, and vision to you!

Beth's philosophy on creativity and creativity coaching

Creativity is our birthright and serves to bring us joy and helps us to heal from pain. Manifesting our creativity takes courage and patience. Courage to face the unknown that lies within and to manifest that in the here and now; and, patience to allow our art to unfold and to mature. Kindness to oneself, and joy in the process are also necessary to the act of creativity.

These same qualities apply to the coaching and teaching process. I am here to listen, guide, ask gentle, probing questions and cheer. The synergy and support gained from working with a coach or guide or group is an immeasurable blessing. We do not need to be alone in our creative journeys. May you find strength and guidance through community.
